CL experts – Budget fallout could taint all state officials
Mississippians aren’t the only ones who could feel the fallout if lawmakers and Gov. Haley Barbour don’t end their battle over a state budget.
Legislative leaders also are at risk, political analysts say.
“I think everybody’s got something to lose. I think the House, Senate, Republicans and Democrats, (Gov.) Haley Barbour and (Lt. Gov.) Phil Bryant are going to all share equally in the public sentiment that follows,” said Marty Wiseman, director of the Stennis Institute of Government at Mississippi State University.
Those seeking higher office may face a bigger political risk. Most of the speculation centers around Bryant, who is considering a run for governor in 2011, and Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Alan Nunnelee, who is eyeing a run for Congress in north Mississippi next year.
