SEC rule will not help academic standards

The Ole Miss Rebels announced 37 new football signees in February. And, contrary to what some people in authority around the SEC might have us believe, the entire educational foundation of the league’s 12 universities was never in danger of crumbling.
But that didn’t prevent the league from enacting a new rule that goes a long way toward improving the appearance of academic integrity without actually helping any of the students or teams involved.
When preseason practice begins in August, 25 legitimate student-athletes who have excelled as high school players and met the academic requirements for admission will be suiting up for Ole Miss as official members of the signing class of 2009. That’s the same number that will show up in Auburn, Tuscaloosa, and Starkville.
