SEC may change football recruiting rule

DESTIN, Fla. — Ole Miss head football coach Houston Nutt signed 37 players in the 2009 recruiting class. That number is not against NCAA rules, but only 25 of the 37 players are allowed by NCAA rules to be on the roster next season. That means there will be some who do not qualify academically, some who may be grayshirts and some who choose instead to attend junior college.
The practice of signing more than 25 players is becoming increasingly common. Now, Auburn has sponsored legislation within the league — with the aim of the SEC sponsoring the legislation at the NCAA level — to restrict the number of signees per class to between 28 and 30 recruits.
The league will vote on the proposal at Friday’s final day of the league’s annual spring meetings.
