Varnado, delighting Bulldog fans, decides NBA can wait
STARKVILLE — In the end, Jarvis Varnado’s decision to return to Mississippi State hinged on analysis that even the simplest of observers could see: At 6 feet 9, 210 pounds, he needs to get stronger.
“He doesn’t think he’s ready, physically, to make that decision,” his father, Winston Varnado, said.
The elder Varnado learned by a phone call from his son earlier in the day what State fans learned shortly before 7 on Monday night: Varnado, who had not hired an agent and had seemingly agonized over the decision to enter the NBA draft last month, said he’ll return for his senior season in Starkville.
