Underdog Eagles cool off Rebels

PEARL — One team was rolling and the other was reeling when Ole Miss and Southern Miss walked into Trustmark Park on Tuesday night.

The Rebels had won eight of 10, including an upset series win over then-No. 1 Georgia over the weekend. Their counterparts from Hattiesburg hadn’t been so lucky, recently losing their best player to injury for the rest of the year and losing five of their last seven games.
But the Golden Eagles flipped the script on the 5,182 in attendance with a 6-4 victory over the No. 7 team in the nation.

“We were big underdogs,” USM starter Jeff Stanley said. “I’m from Florida. Everybody’s been telling me it’s like Florida-Florida State. That I better get ready.
