CL – Eminent domain: Get it right this time
Gov. Haley Barbour was right to veto a bill earlier this year that went too far in limiting the use of eminent domain. Now he’s right to call a special session to encourage legislators to set less draconian regulations on eminent domain.
Barbour announced Tuesday his intention to call a special session to address the contentious issue. It will be done during the resumption of the current regular session recess. Lawmakers are slated to return to the Capitol on May 6 to finish writing a state budget.
Eminent domain is the process the government uses to take private land for projects ranging from road construction to industrial development. The Legislature came close to making a serious mistake with its approval of a bill to limit the use of eminent domain.
