Agnew: McMillin tired of Melton’s meddling

This town wasn’t big enough for the two of them.

Two men, both stubborn as 100 mules, gave it a shot but in the end their prodigious egos got the best of them.

First, Sheriff Malcolm McMillin’s departure from his second job as Jackson’s police chief was called a firing. But Jackson Mayor Frank Melton quickly corrected himself and said McMillin tendered his resignation. It was bound to happen.

Under McMillin, the control-crazed Melton had lost his influence over the Police Department. Gruff and full of self-confidence, McMillin was perhaps the one person in the Melton administration strong enough to tell the mayor to take a hike when it came to Police Department affairs.

On the occasions when Melton meddled, McMillin struck back, bluntly reminding Melton there was a new chief in town who wouldn’t genuflect on command.
