MS Legislators plan to send US Congress a ‘wake up call’

By: Magnolia Tribune - March 10, 2009

State legislators across the nation are sending resolutions to Congress and the President of the United States to remind them of something called the 10th amendment.

In light of ever increasing federal incursion into state business many believe the time is now to begin enforcing the United States Constitution. Authoring Mississippi’s House Resolution no. 69 is, State Rep. Steven Palazzo, R-Biloxi, “The federal government is over reaching into areas that the State best knows how to handle so we thought we would join along with other states in providing Congress and the President a little civics lesson on the 10th amendment.” The Tenth Amendment simply states, the powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

Palazzo states “Everyone I talk with is fed up with the federal government telling us to do this and that. They give me one example after another on the how the government has failed us, with the exception of national security. And I can only agree, so why would we have them legislate and regulate how we handle our families, schools, and businesses. Honestly if this failing economy and the Feds idiotic response is not proof of how clueless they are, then please someone explain why this administration is using failed socialistic principles of economics.”

Thirty other legislators have signed onto the resolution and their concerns vary but the overall message can be best summed up by State Rep. Sam C. Mims, V, R-McComb, “The Constitution does not give the federal government the authority to require the states to regulate matters,” said Mims. “I think Mississippi governs best when we solve our own problems, and this resolution emphasizes that belief.” Palazzo said the state’s authorities have eroded over the years, and as a result, we have lost full control over our businesses, schools, families and even state government. “Congress is bankrupting America financially and morally, slowly robbing us of our God given rights as American citizens, we better wake up to this reality before its too late.”
