Big time college athletics: A dangerous American obsession
Once again, big time college athletics is under scrutiny for its corruption of the historic mission of the university and for exploitation of student-athletes.
A recent investigation done by Mike Knobler of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution revealed huge gaps and special admission procedures for top football and basketball players. A commentary by Allen Sacks in Sports Business Magazine elaborated on education finishing second to athletics in big state universities.
America has been a sports-crazed culture since the post-Civil War period. College football caught on in the late 19th century.
But two monumental factors have shaped the modern college athletic scene since 1950. Both have greatly contributed to our dangerous obsession with State U athletics.
