New tricks: Newspaper columnist and talk radio host
I have no preconceived notions about talk radio and luckily, neither do the folks at TeleSouth. I plan to use that format much like this column – to inform, to educate, to provoke and to get folks thinking about the issues of the day that matter in Mississippi.
When you think about it, there’s not much better preparation for talk radio than spending the day in the newsroom of a large daily newspaper. And I think the candid spontaneity of responses from talk radio listeners might be good for the newspaper column, too.
Longer days, but worth it
For me, it means a commitment to longer days and longer hours on the job. But my wife, Leilani, tells me she thinks doing a talk radio show won’t be much different from my normal routine. She’s right.
Since I’ve had the privilege of writing this column for a statewide audience the last three decades, I run into people everywhere I go who want to talk about news and politics with me. I learn a lot from them and I truly enjoy the interaction.
Bottom line, if you hate my newspaper column, you’ll probably really hate the new talk radio show. Why? I plan to write and to talk from the same point of view.
