Is Favre Leaving Football, or Just the Jets?
For one day, at least, Brett Favre challenged Alex Rodriguez for the big headlines.
On Wednesday, Favre, one of the N.F.L.’s most exalted quarterbacks, announced his retirement. Again. Hold the video tributes and rocking chairs. We’ve been down this road before.
“We’re just taking him based on what he said in his conversation that he was done,” Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum said during a conference call.
Last March, Favre tearfully announced his retirement. Three months later, Favre contacted the Packers about a possible return. Then on July 11, Favre sent a letter to the Packers asking for his unconditional release to allow him to play for another team. Favre formally filed for reinstatement to the N.F.L. on July 29. On Aug. 7, Green Bay traded Favre to the Jets.
