MISSISSIPPI HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, REP BRIAN ALDRIDGE, PASSES VOTER ID
Jackson, Miss. – Today, the Mississippi House of Representatives passed
comprehensive Voter ID legislation.
Numerous Mississippians have expressed with great conviction their support
for government issued photo ID, and today their hard work has come to
fruition.
While Aldridge disagreed with some portions of the bill and is disappointed
that some House members “muddied” it up for purposes of killing the bill, he
still feels it keeps dialogue open on this important subject.
State Representative Brian Aldridge (R-Tupelo) says, “Mississippians have
waited for years for protection in Mississippi elections, and today those
safeguards have passed. HB 1533 passed by a bipartisan effort with a vote
of 77-44. This bill now heads to the Mississippi Senate where minor changes
may be made. The bottom line is that voters in the near future will have to
prove they are voting, and not someone else.”
Many argued those over 65 may not have a driver’s licenses to provide at the
polls.
Representative Aldridge expressed to the membership, “Less than 1% of
Mississippians are without government issued photo ID, and for those whom
are without, the Secretary of State’s office can provide it.”
Many members against Voter ID, argued fraud was not prevalent in MS.
Aldridge also provided members of the House with information that 462,000
driver licenses are issued to Mississippians over the age of 65; however,
the census only has 365,000 Mississippians alive over 65.
