State Superintendent of Education Hank Bounds reviewed a proposed model for the state’s new accountability system with more than 100 superintendents and school officials Tuesday at Hattiesburg High School.
“We’ve been working for some time to build this new system,” Bounds told the group of educators from the Pine Belt and surrounding areas.
“We’ve asked a lot of folks what a good system will look like and what an equitable system will look like so at the end of the day we benefit boys and girls.”
Previously, the state rated schools on a five-tier system, with Level 5 being the highest rating based on student achievement and annual academic growth.
The proposed system – which will go before the state Board of Education next week – suggests moving away from numbers and adopting labels: failing, at-risk of failing, academic watch, low performing, satisfactory, high performing and star school.
