Recruiting Is Becoming A Nasty Business

As another National Signing Day has gone into history in college football, I began to think of the good old days, when relatively few people cared about recruiting.

Was it so long ago when coaches went out and recruited a kid and that kid said he was going to go to a particular school that the other coaches and schools pursuing him backed off?
Was it so long ago when kids simply made their decision to go to school and play football without the fanfare of doing it on ESPN and going through the gyrations of putting on a bunch of hats before finally letting breathless recruitniks know the decision?

Was it so long ago that we didn’t have magazines, blogs, and God knows what else devoted to recruiting where grown people didn’t go into chat rooms to discuss rumor, might be’s or could be’s when it came to recruiting?
