Think it over before selling...

Think it over before selling governor’s jet

By: Magnolia Tribune - February 2, 2009

The Hattiesburg American Editorial, 2/1/9

We applaud the Mississippi Legislature’s efforts to find ways to save money from wherever they can. But we hope the lawmakers consider the long-term impact of some of their actions.

An example is an effort to sell the state-owned jet that Gov. Haley Barbour and other state officials use.

The House last week voted to sell the eight-seat jet valued at $3.7 million.

The House-passed bill provides that the jet could be sold by competitive bids, public auction or on eBay.

We hope the Senate will take a serious look at the House bill and ask some tough questions. For example, we believe the jet is a valuable economic development tool that the governor and other state officials can use to court businesses and industries that might consider moving to Mississippi. Shouldn’t we weigh the new revenue the jet could help bring to the state against the money that would be gained by selling it?
