Security at Jackson City Hall stirs debate

The Jackson City Council agreed last year to stop paying security guards to work weekends at City Hall.

But on Mayor Frank Melton’s orders, the guards have continued to work Saturdays and Sundays.

The council called for the change during the 2008 budget hearings. By removing armed security guards from City Hall on weekends, the city was able to save about $50,000. That money was set aside to help repave city streets.

City Hall has an electronic security system that the council planned to use on weekends.

Councilman Jeff Weill, who chairs the budget committee, asked city officials this week to explain why security guards are still working on weekends. City Hall is closed on Saturday and Sunday.

“No one is here,” Weill said. “It’s completely unnecessary.”
