Accounting: How do you ‘lose’ 30 vehicles?!

By: Magnolia Tribune - December 26, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 12/26/8

Maybe in a world where objects are just numbers, losing 30 or so vehicles – cars, trucks, vans – is no big deal.

But in the land of average, taxpaying citizens, for the city of Jackson to have a couple of dozen or so cars unaccounted for is incomprehensible.

How do you lose a fleet of vehicles?!

Yet, according to Valerie Nevels, head of the city’s internal audit division, out of the 1,000 or so vehicles the city owned, all but about 30 have been located.

That’s a nice way to put it.
