HATTIESBURG — The Southern Miss defense shouldered much of the blame during the team’s five-game losing streak.
Statistically, USM rated among the 20 worst defenses in the nation when the team was 2-6 and at its lowest point midway through the season.
Golden Eagles fans began to wonder what drastic changes had to take place to make sure there would be a defensive recovery for the 2009 season. Defensive coordinator Todd Bradford admitted he saw more than a few people roll their eyes when he would say his players were making progress even as they were giving up big yardage to teams like Rice, UTEP and Memphis.
