Over several years, two Yazoo County women may have racked up about $75,000 in credit card charges at taxpayer expense, State Auditor Stacey Pickering says.
Karen Smith and Carolyn Coates, charged with embezzlement, surrendered Wednesday to Yazoo County sheriff’s officials.
Smith is the former executive director of the Yazoo County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. Coates was administrative manager of the Yazoo County Chamber of Commerce.
Both were freed on bond later Wednesday.
They were indicted in November.
Pickering, whose office investigated the cases, said the women used county credit cards to buy groceries and make car payments. He also said the two even wired money to friends via Western Union.
