The city of Jackson has not done enough to keep its employees from stealing gasoline and misusing city gas cards, members of the City Council said Monday.
They pointed to the thousands of gas purchases made each month where workers did not get receipts or paid for gas using memorized gas card numbers.
Council members questioned whether the city has allowed workers to fill up their personal cars or gasoline cans.
“The problem has gone on for a very long time,” Councilman Jeff Weill said. “The city is spending a lot of money, and we need to figure out a way to save some.”
Valerie Nevels, who heads the city’s internal audit department, said some employees may have been stealing gasoline.
But, “We have no proof of it,” she said.
