OXFORD, Miss. — His players had been worn to shreds by his relentless practices, his assistants shut out from making any suggestions about the way he ran the program … into the ground, according to his fiercest critics.
But Ed Orgeron remained strong-willed and independent to the end, and his attitude as Ole Miss’ coach was typified by one split-second decision that will live in infamy.
His choice to send the offense back onto the field on fourth-and-1 in the second half against Mississippi State last season, with his team leading by two touchdowns, created confusion in the stands and consternation on his own sideline.
“Somebody has to stop him!” offensive line coach Art Kehoe screamed at anyone who would listen. “Somebody has to stop him!”
Everyone knows the rest — the Rebels failed to make the first down, Mississippi State seized the momentum en route to an overtime victory and Orgeron was fired the next day.
