Hosemann says smooth election due to planning

Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann credits the planning done after the March primary for the minimal problems and controversy in this month’s general election, which drew a record number of Mississippians to the polls.

The Republican Hosemann, who oversees elections statewide, said in an interview this week that his goal was “for the news on that day to be about the results and the candidates. That is the way it should be. It should not be about the process.”

Hosemann, who is in his first year as secretary of state, was under added scrutiny because of the expected heavy turnout and the 197,000 new registered voters.

Plus, he had come under criticism after dramatically underestimating the turnout in the March primaries.
