It was about a quarter ’til 10 and the Louisiana Superdome was rocking. Oft-maligned cornerback Jason David had intercepted a pass by the Green Bay Packers’ Aaron Rodgers and the New Orleans Saints were knocking at the door.
Monday Night Football, everybody watching, and all eyes turning to Deuce McAllister, one of the most popular players in club history.
The Saints had to get him the ball.
On second-and-goal from the 3, Saints quarterback Drew Brees took the snap from teammate Jonathan Goodwin. The Saints ran a trap play to the left side, with McAllister sliding through the hole and into the end zone.
The Saints had built an insurmountable lead, and McAllister had cemented a legacy.
The former Ole Miss star had become the Saints’ leader with 54 career touchdowns, breaking a tie with another former SEC running back, the undersized but resourceful Dalton Hilliard, who played just down the street at LSU.
The Saints would go on to bury the Packers 51-29, while giving the home crowd a thrill in what may have been McAllister’s final game in the Superdome.
McAllister and Saints defensive linemen Will Smith and Charles Grant have appealed the NFL’s ruling that they violated the league’s drug policy by using a banned substance, a diuretic called StarCaps. But no one in their right mind thinks the NFL is going to go easy on McAllister and the others who used Bumetanide to lose a few pounds. That’s never been the league’s M.O., so everyone sensed this could actually be it for Deuce.
