A few fumbles didn’t dim return man’s confidence
TUSCALOOSA – While Auburn’s players danced in front of the band and held up six fingers, Alabama’s Javier Arenas hobbled the other direction on crutches, far slower than he would have liked.
A sprained ankle suffered the previous week left Arenas out of uniform during the 2007 Iron Bowl. He was on the sideline, though, to witness it all.
“It was tough,” Arenas said.
One year later, Arenas heads into Saturday’s rematch after the best statistical game of his career. The junior cornerback’s 80-yard punt return for a touchdown was the highlight of a 32-7 victory over Mississippi State that kept Alabama No. 1 in all major polls, a spot it held through the bye week.
Fellow cornerback Marquis Johnson explains Arenas’ unwavering confidence with the word “swag.”
