Everyone involved in bringing the Toyota assembly plant to Blue Springs agrees that cinching the $1.3 billion development and its jobs-rich network of suppliers would not have been possible without U.S. Highway 78, a four-lane corridor designated for eventual status as Interstate 22.
The same people – civic leaders, elected officials in the PUL Alliance and economic development professionals – also say an additional layer of good highways regionally connecting the Toyota web is essential in realizing the project’s full potential.
But there’s a big problem: Simply stated, it’s money.
Adding to the general concern about funding is the partially unexpected national financial crisis and its implications for government spending, especially discretionary funding.
