Jackson City Council members are questioning whether the city is prepared to take over its bus system for the first time in more than 30 years – a move that will be completed by next month.
Members of Mayor Frank Melton’s administration told council members Monday that contract negotiations with an Ohio-based transit firm slated to run JATRAN fell through Friday. The failed deal will force the city to take over JATRAN in mid-December.
“I can’t see for the life of me why we want to get involved in this thicket,” council President Leslie Burl McLemore said.
He said the city has trouble managing its current responsibilities.
