Nutt expects a recruiting boost if Rebels play on

Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt spoke for all bowl-bound teams Wednesday when he touted the advantages of playing in the postseason.

“We get 20 practices (that non-bowl teams don’t get),” Nutt said. “Your school gets mentioned the whole month and then recruiting steps up.

“It gives us a shot in the arm and jump-starts us (on the recruiting trail).”

Indeed, Nutt said making a bowl game at Ole Miss for the first time since 2003 would send a message to recruits.

” ‘They haven’t been winning or going to bowls but here they go,’ ” Nutt said of what recruits are saying. “It would be a good start if we could do that.”

But first, Ole Miss must win one more game – which figures to come Saturday at Louisiana-Monroe. That would get the Rebels to 6-4 with games at Louisiana State and at home against Mississippi State still to play.

Six is bowl magic

Kentucky coach Rich Brooks said Saturday’s game against Vanderbilt was huge because both teams need the win.

Vandy obviously needs the win to get bowl eligible and Kentucky, Brooks said, needs the win “to secure a bowl.”
