Mayor Frank Melton’s federal trial has been put on hold for two months to give time for defense attorneys to review thousands of pages of government evidence against the mayor and his former bodyguard, Michael Recio.
The break also gives lawyers on both sides an opportunity to continue an escalating war of legal motions that has characterized the past several weeks since federal Judge Dan Jordan placed a gag order over the proceedings.
“It seems to set the table for sensational motions,” said Mississippi College law school professor Matt Steffey, who has been following the case.
Jury selection was set to begin today. On Tuesday, Jordan moved the trial to Jan. 5.
