Miles: Lee still the starter; Jefferson will play

Struggling Jarrett Lee is still the starter. Andrew Hatch is still out. And Jordan Jefferson is still waiting to complete his first collegiate pass, although that wait should end Saturday.

That’s the up-to-the-minute LSU quarterback update.

Lee will remain the starter at 7 p.m. Saturday, when LSU hosts Troy, but LSU coach Les Miles said Jefferson will play a significant amount.

“I think he needs to have some” playing time, Miles said of Jefferson.

Though Jefferson warmed up during Saturday’s 27-21 overtime loss to top-ranked Alabama, the staff was reluctant to play such an inexperienced player in a crucial game.

“I think it would have been eminently hard for him to come in in the last game,” Miles said. “And I think it’s fair to him, at this point, to let him see some more playing time.”

LSU took the possibility of seeking a medical redshirt from Jefferson in the previous game, a blowout over Tulane, but Jefferson played in just one series, running the ball once and handing the ball off on every other snap.

Jefferson has made three appearances this season but has thrown just one pass, an incompletion against North Texas.

Although he had an increase in snaps during practice, with little game experience, Jefferson was ill-prepared to come in against Bama. LSU, however, has to get Jefferson more ready.

“I think we have to prepare him to play,” Miles said.

Hatch, a sophomore who started the first three games of the season, likely will miss his third straight game with a lower leg injury.

“I’ll know more later but right now I’d say (his playing chances are) not good,” Miles said.

Miles said Hatch is expected to return before the end of the regular season.
