Tuberville has $6 million trump card
AUBURN — When Tennessee decided to force longtime coach Phillip Fulmer to step down this week, the athletic department had to come up with $6 million to do so.
Fired Clemson coach Tommy Bowden is owed $3.5 million. Even outgoing Washington coach Tyrone Willingham will pick up a check for $1 million.
If Auburn officials decide to fire Tommy Tuberville after this year, it will cost $6 million — $3 million due almost immediately and another $3 million due within one year. There are no loopholes, no catches and no reasons for Tuberville to accept a penny less.
Tennessee fans are understandably perplexed about Fulmer’s generous going-away gift, especially because his contract was inexplicably extended and enhanced only months ago.
