State Justice Oliver Diaz Jr. survived two criminal trials and Hurricane Katrina but he couldn’t survive his re-election bid.
With 98 percent of the precincts reporting Tuesday night, challenger Bubba Pierce defeated Diaz 58 percent to 42 percent.
“We are pleased with the districtwide support,” Pierce said.
Diaz could not be reached for comment.
Pierce managed to win big in the counties where he serves as chancery judge and remained close in Gulf Coast counties.
The campaign of the 43-year-old chancery judge from Leakesville raised $383,897, compared with $218,116 for Diaz, 48, through Oct. 25, according to the latest reports filed with the secretary of state’s office.
