6 electoral votes up for grabs in Miss.

By: Magnolia Tribune - November 3, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger, 11/3/8

Peery Horner is retired from the Air Force and still has the close-cropped hair and upright posture of a longtime military man. Despite his own disenchantment with Republicans’ handling of the economy, Horner’s choice for president is Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, a Navy veteran and former prisoner of war.

Horner said he can’t shake a gnawing sense that the Democratic nominee, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, lacks the experience to be president.

Mississippi has voted Republican in every presidential election since 1980.

The state is about 37 percent black. While Mississippi voters don’t register by race or party, there’s a long history of people voting largely – but not entirely – along racial lines, with Democrats faring well in predominantly black parts of the state and Republicans faring well among whites.

Even if there’s an extraordinarily large turnout by black voters for the first black presidential nominee, the politically conservative state is likely to lean toward McCain.
