Republican Senate candidate Roger Wicker continued his effort Thursday to tie his opponent, Ronnie Musgrove, to the national Democratic Party.
Both Wicker and Musgrove, vying in Tuesday’s special Senate election for the seat vacated last year by Republican Trent Lott, spoke Thursday at the annual Mississippi Economic Council Hob Nob event on the grounds of the Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum.
The Democrat Musgrove, who served from 2000 to 2004 as governor, stressed to the largely pro-Republican crowd of about 1,100 the importance of small business to the state.
“Small business is the backbone of our economy,” Musgrove said.
In the Senate, Musgrove said he would work to direct any tax relief toward small business and the middle class – with an emphasis on small business.
Wicker, a former U.S. House member from Tupelo appointed to the Senate seat on an interim basis by Gov. Haley Barbour, told the crowd the election was about the future of the country.
