Laura Bush campaigns for Wicker in Gulfport

“Roger supports making the President’s tax cuts permanent,” Bush said. “In today’s economic climate it’s more important than ever to have leaders who will make wise decisions for our future, and Sen. Wicker knows that the best way to help working families is to make sure they get to keep more of their hard-earned money.”

If the focus of Bush’s speech – more about Wicker, less about McCain-Palin – was not immediately clear, the political signs pasted to the wall at the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center certainly were. The many large colorful signs for Wicker and Chocran seemed to swallow the few small McCain-Palin posters.

Bush used most of her time on stage to urge fellow Republicans to vote on Tuesday, and Gov. Haley Barbour told the crowd that the Mississippi senatorial race could mean the difference between complete Democratic control in Washington.

“If you listen to the liberal media elite in New York and Washington and Los Angeles, you’d think Obama has already been elected president,” Barbour said. “Now they want a Democratic Senate so they can cram (policy issues) down our throats. A lot of people believe that the difference will be whether or not we elect Roger Wicker.”
