LONDON (AFP) — New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees showed just why he leads the NFL in passing yards by inspiring his side to a 37-32 victory over the San Diego Chargers at Wembley here Sunday,
In the second regular season match to be played at the home of English football, Chargers quarter-back Philip Rivers showed his class as well by throwing for three touchdowns.
A see-saw contest came down to the closing couple of minutes. With 70 seconds left, Rivers threw only his sixth interception of the season.
New Orleans then voluntarily conceded a two-point safety as they tried to run down the clock.
There was still time for Rivers to throw one long-range, ‘hail mary’ pass with just a second left but the ball was batted away by the Saints defence to leave the last play incomplete.
Rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of a crowd of over 82,000 fans but, unlike last year’s fixture at Wembley where the New York Giants beat the Miami Dolphins 13-10, bad weather didn’t reduce the amount of end-zone action.
