Jets’ QB Brett Favre revisits Oakland, scene of triumph and sadness

Even now, five years later, Brett Favre’s emotions are twisted. It’s such a wonderful memory – Packers-Raiders, Dec. 22, 2003 – yet it rekindles a forever hurt. He played the game of his career during the worst time in his life.

“It was a special game,” Favre said Wednesday with a heavy smile, “but it carried a lot of weight, obviously.”
On the eve of a Monday night game in Oakland, Favre received word that his father, Irvin Favre, 58, had died suddenly of a heart attack in Mississippi. What happened over the next 24 hours triggered a surge of feelings, sadness to awe. To this day, those close to Favre still can’t believe what he did.
