Will Mississippi be part of what could be a national trend on election night?
According to information compiled from the Real Clear Politics Web site, Democrats stand an excellent opportunity of doing well in U.S. House and Senate races.
In Mississippi, it is generally believed that the race to fill the Senate seat left vacant by last year’s retirement of Trent Lott is competitive.
Real Clear lists the Senate race between Republican Roger Wicker and Democrat Ronnie Musgrove as a tossup.
Because of Lott’s unexpected retirement, Mississippi is in the unusual situation of having two Senate elections this November. But the contest between Republican Sen. Thad Cochran and Democratic challenger Erik Fleming does not scratch on the Real Clear list of competitive races.
The Web site lists the race between 1st District U.S. Rep. Travis Childers, a Democrat, and Republican Southaven Mayor Greg Davis as competitive, but leaning toward the incumbent.
