U.S. Rep. Travis Childers, D-Miss., defended his vote against the country’s costly economic bailout plan and admonished his Republican opponent during an hour-long meeting Tuesday with members of the Daily Journal editorial board.
Childers, who faces Greg Davis in the Nov. 4 general election for the 1st District congressional seat, said he feels confident he’ll win another term and cited recent polls showing him 12-13 points ahead of his challenger.
Asked about Davis’ recent television commercials where the Republican promises a new attitude after his negative campaign leading up to the special election in May, Childers said it’s too late.
“Greg Davis has gone all over the country apologizing,” Childers said. “But he’s never apologized to me, he’s never apologized to my wife, he’s never apologized to my mother or my children. And you know what? It’s too late.”
While the two candidates differ on several key issues, they do agree on the $700 billion economic bailout plan recently passed by Congress and signed by President Bush: Both men are against it.
