AUBURN — All is forgiven and forgotten.
At least that’s the line that both Tommy Tuberville and Bobby Petrino trotted out this week, days before they meet for the first time as head coaches on Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Petrino served as Auburn’s offensive coordinator in 2002. In 2003, he left to be head coach at Louisville. In his absence, Auburn’s offense crashed. Days before Auburn’s regular-season finale against Alabama, university officials secretly interviewed Petrino for the Auburn job (even though Tuberville had yet to be formally fired)
The news leaked out, Auburn beat Alabama, fans rallied around Tuberville and his job was saved.
The passage of time has eased some, but perhaps not all, of the hard feelings.
“This is a business,” Tuberville said. “Bobby is a good football coach. He was at a great place at Auburn. He realized that. I guess he felt like if there was going to be a change, why not him?
“That is all passed. He’s got a good job. I’ve got a good job. We both have to work hard at what we are doing.”
Petrino said he hoped all ill feelings are now in the past. He said he enjoyed his one year on Auburn’s staff.
