As the Senate prepared to vote on a revised $700 billion bailout plan, some Mississippians were skeptical Wednesday about the bill’s purpose and effect.
Terry Hunt was among them.
“We’re not given a lot of background,” the 45-year-old Jackson resident said. “We’re told that it can (help), but I’ve not heard how it’s going to.”
The Senate approved the measure, but Mississippi Sens. Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker, both Republicans, were among 25 members who opposed it.
“It doesn’t get at the root of the problem, and I’m not sure it’s necessary,” Wicker said earlier in the day.
The “no” votes defied White House and congressional leaders who have lobbied recalcitrant lawmakers this week to back the plan to buy bad mortgages and other debt from the nation’s financial institutions.
