Bobby Bowden has one call left: When to step down
It’s strange.
“It’s fine,” Bobby Bowden says.
It’s uncomfortable to watch.
“It’s working great,” the Florida State coach says.
On Saturday, the University of Miami will use two quarterbacks, and this will inflame some fans, because it’s different from how football typically operates. But that’s tame compared to what’s happening on Bowden’s side of the field. Florida State is using two head coaches.
It’s not billed that way. It’s billed as Bowden, the king, and Jimbo Fisher, the prince-in-waiting and offensive coordinator. But Bowden doesn’t pick the quarterback now, doesn’t pick any plays, doesn’t even really pick whether to punt or kick a field goal at times, which always is the head coach’s gig.
