QB Lee earns praise in his first start
BATON ROUGE – Death Valley on Saturday night in front of a raucous crowd of 92,710 and a national television audience – quite a place for Tyson Lee to make his first college start.
Coming into Saturday’s game at LSU, Mississippi State coach Sylvester Croom said he would play all three of his quarterbacks. But usual starter Wesley Carroll and third-stringer Chris Relf never saw the field.
Lee, a Columbus native and a transfer from Itawamba Community College, was 17-for-26 for 175 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in State’s 34-24 loss to the defending national champions.
“He had an air of calmness about him, and for the first time, it looked like he was totally confident in everything he was doing,” Croom said.
Croom saw that “air” about Lee during practices last week. He began considering starting Lee after Tuesday’s practices, and after Wednesday’s session he decided to do it.
