Mountain best?
College football is becoming less predictable by the week. The Southeastern Conference can make an 0argument that it’s the nation’s top conference with national championships in each of the past two seasons and three of the past five. Plus, the SEC achieved a first in its conference history this week, placing five teams in the AP’s top 10.
And yet USC coach Pete Carroll hinted that the Pac-10 owns the SEC, boasting his conference is 10-6 against the SEC in the past 16 meetings. Given that, what do we make of the Mountain West’s 4-0 pummeling of Pac-10 teams last weekend? BYU’s 59-0 thrashing of UCLA just a week after the Bruins knocked off Tennessee in overtime adds credibility to the Mountain West’s bid to crash the BCS party at season’s end. So did Utah’s victory at Michigan in the season opener. The Mountain West is 10-4 in nonconference Football Bowl Subdivision games. The ACC is 6-8 and the Big East 5-9.
