Don’t give No. 1 USC the national title yet
The numbers don’t lie. Eighty-seven points scored. Only 10 allowed. A total of 906 yards of offense in two games. Only 394 given up, and much of that during garbage time.
We should just go ahead and give Southern Cal the national championship trophy now and save ourselves a lot of time and bother.
Or so some would have us believe.
The hyperbole that so often pervades sports was cascading down like a hard summer rain as the Trojans finished off a 35-3 pasting of Ohio State. Kirk Herbstreit said the only team that can beat USC is USC. Brent Musburger said no other defense in the country compares to the Trojans — although, he admitted, there might be one in the SEC that’s close.
Really? You think?
Seems to me there was another Southern Cal team that was drawing similar raves just last year. The Trojans’ entire defense was back from an 11-2 Rose Bowl championship team.
Instead, the Trojans lost to Stanford and Oregon and finished 11-2 again, while LSU knocked off Ohio State for the national title.
