Tight end’s role still hot topic for debate
STARKVILLE — Sylvester Croom has gotten the question so much here in the past half-decade that it looks like it’s starting to bother him. But invariably, someone – whether it be fan, reporter, whatever – is going to ask why his offense doesn’t throw to the tight ends.
The numbers, at least, seem to prove the questioner has a legitimate point. At least until Croom, the Mississippi State coach, cocks his head back, lets the pitch in his voice rise an octave and takes the defensive.
“I really don’t worry about it,” Croom said. “You can’t just say, ‘Tell the quarterback to throw the ball to the tight end.’ I think sometimes the fans just don’t understand that.”
To hear Croom tell it, the tight ends are a vital part of his West Coast offense at State, the one still trying to find traction in the start of its fifth year. They were a big part of last week’s 34-10 win over Southeastern Louisiana.
