Mississippi’s two U.S. senators and Disrict 1’s congressman expressed support Monday for a special transfer of funds to shore up a sudden, looming shortfall in the Highway Trust Fund, the key source of federal highway construction funding nationwide.
Sens. Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker, both Republicans, and U.S. Rep. Travis Childers, a Demcorat, said through spokesmen they support a transfer of $8 billion from other federal funds into the trust fund. The money would ensure full allocations to all 50 states in the face of declining revenue as tax collections fall, related to the price of gasoline and curtailed driving.
Travis Childers, D-Booneville, voted for the $8 billion transfer in late July in House Resolution 6532.
