Tom Brady’s season may have ended almost before it began. The NFL’s reigning MVP left Sunday’s game against Kansas City in the first quarter after being hit on the left leg, depriving the New England Patriots of the quarterback who last season led them to a 16-0 regular season and their fourth Super Bowl in eight years.

Multiple sources, including The Boston Globe, the NFL Network, ESPN.com, Yahoo.com and Boston radio station WEEI, reported Sunday that Brady has a torn ACL and will undergo an MRI on Monday.

An NFL source told the Globe that coach Bill Belichick told the team Brady’s injury could be bad and to prepare for backup quarterback Matt Cassel taking over. Cassel replaced Brady on Sunday and threw a touchdown pass as New England won its opener against Kansas City, 17-10.

The Globe also reported that the Patriots will bring in former Tampa Bay Bucs QB Chris Simms for a workout on Monday. The Pats have turned to veteran QB Vinny Testaverde in the past as a backup, and former Vikings QB Daunte Culpepper also is available, having recently retired.

Brady, who has started 128 consecutive games, went to the turf clutching his left knee midway through the first quarter when he was hit in the pocket by Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard. After being tended to on the field, he walked off, limping, between two trainers.

Brady, 31, went to the locker room and was not seen again on the sideline as Cassel led the Patriots to a 17-10 victory. The two-time Super Bowl MVP was not available for comment after the game, and coach Bill Belichick said he had nothing to add to the in-game announcement that it was a knee injury.
