BRAD LOCKE:Remember Maine? This loss was worse
Don’t worry, Bulldog fans, it’s not the end of the world. It only looks that way from the pit of despair you find yourselves in.
Saturday night’s 22-14 loss to Louisiana Tech, on national television, brought back some horrid memories for you, didn’t it? Specifically, Sept. 18, 2004.
Maine.
That 9-7 loss to a Division I-AA school defined just how far MSU had to go in its bid to become an SEC contender. My predecessor, the estimable Gregg Ellis, wrote that the Bulldogs had hit “rock bottom.”
A low point, indeed. But not as low as Saturday night.
This loss was worse, much worse, than the Maine debacle. That’s no knock on Louisiana Tech, but consider the context.
The Maine game was just Sylvester Croom’s third at the helm. The Bulldogs would go on to finish 3-8 (2-6 in the SEC).
This is 2008, a year after Croom guided MSU to an 8-5 record and a win in the Liberty Bowl. This is the time for big steps forward.
