LSU’s football team met at the Tigers’ on-campus training center Tuesday afternoon, then went ahead with practice under the assumption that the damage Hurricane Gustav inflicted on Baton Rouge would not be enough to derail their scheduled home game Saturday.
“They had a team meeting just to make sure everybody made it through the storm OK, then they went into position meetings and a walkthrough to prepare for Saturday,” LSU athletics spokesman Michael Bonnette said. “The game is still going ahead as scheduled unless we’re notified otherwise.”
Coming off a 41-13 victory over Appalachian State in a home game moved up to 10 a.m. local time last Saturday so as not to impede evacuations, LSU is now scheduled to play Troy in Tiger Stadium on Saturday night.
However, Tiger Stadium had some damage, including broken glass and torn awnings over club seats. Debris littered the stands and playing field and the fence surrounding the field was damaged. A large scoreboard above the north end zone also was damaged.
Bonnette said it wasn’t clear if the stadium lights were damaged. Power at the stadium was out.
Next to the stadium, the roof of the athletic administration building was damaged and there was flooding from rain runoff on the first floor.
The football team’s Charles McClendon practice facility lost a privacy fence around outdoor practice fields, while there was some roof damage to the indoor field where the team met and practiced on Tuesday afternoon.
The indoor field and the football offices did have generator power, however.
