Tigers WRs serve up tall order for Reb DBs
OXFORD — Ole Miss defensive back Cassius Vaughn is used to matching up against receivers taller than his 5-foot-11 frame. That’s just part of the deal when playing cornerback.
But when the Memphis receivers line up on Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, that height disparity will be taken to – well, um – new heights.
The Tigers’ top two receivers are Duke Calhoun, who’s plenty tall at 6-foot-4, and Carlos Singleton, who at 6-8 is one of the nation’s tallest receivers. The pair combined to catch 113 passes for 1,657 yards and 16 touchdowns last season.
“One person can’t get it done,” Vaughn said. “We’ve got to have everybody, be disciplined and do what the coaches teach.”
Calhoun’s emergence as a star at Memphis isn’t unexpected. He was heavily recruited by Tennessee, Arkansas and Ole Miss before staying at home in Memphis, where he went to high school at Raleigh-Egypt.
